“The last gig I played was Auckland, New Zealand, in early March of 2020,” Metheny continued. The rest of that tour - Brazil, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Cuba - was canceled, too, as COVID-19 spread throughout the world. “He got up the next morning and closed Argentina,” Metheny recalled in a remote chat from his home in upstate New York.
